Dubai:   The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police have launched Joint Patrol Units to oversee and enforce compliance among heavy vehicles in Dubai. This initiative is part of the 5-Year Executive Plan for the Traffic Safety Strategy.

Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, emphasized that these units will improve traffic safety, enforce regulations, and ensure that heavy vehicles are properly maintained to prevent accidents.

The new patrol units will focus on major roads, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Al Khail Road, Ras Al Khor Road, Al Maktoum Airport Road, and Dubai-Al Ain Road, to enhance safety and ensure adherence to traffic laws.

Key features and enforcement focus

The patrol units will inspect heavy vehicles for compliance with traffic laws, including adherence to speed limits, regular vehicle inspections, and tyre safety.

Violations related to overloading, improper cargo securing, and lack of necessary permits will be met with fines issued by police officers.

Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, emphasized that these inspections are crucial for maintaining road safety and achieving Dubai's goal of zero traffic fatalities.

Major General Al Ghaithi praised the partnership for its role in reducing traffic fatalities by 93% from 2007 to 2023.

Supporting infrastructure and plans

The RTA has recently completed 10 truck rest stops, part of a broader plan to improve infrastructure for heavy vehicle drivers. Located along key routes, these rest stops offer facilities such as prayer rooms, diesel refueling stations, and rest areas, further supporting the needs of truck drivers and enhancing safety on the roads.

This comprehensive approach, combining enforcement with supportive infrastructure, underscores Dubai’s commitment to improving traffic management and road safety across the city.
